Needles are a long slender tool with a pointed tip. The first needle was made from bones or woods now it is manufactured from high carbon steel wire, nickel or gold plated for corrosion resistance. A needle has a hole called the eye at the non pointed end to carry thread or cord through the fabric after the pointed end pierces it. There are different sizes of needles denoted by the number given on a packet. For example, the needle which has size 1 is thicker and longer similarly the needle with size 10 is shorter and finer. The types of hand sewing needles available in the market are:-

Tapestry needles – they have a blunt point and large eye to accommodate several threads.

Embroidery needles – the needle is smaller and has the smaller eye and less sharp than tapestry needles. They are good to use in cross stitching. The needle is easier to pierce the fabric

Petite tapestry needles -shorter in length and make stitching faster.

Double eye tapestry needles – needles with two eyes basically used for different types of floss or two or more colors.

Quilting needles- these are quite short and sharp. They do stitching quickly and precisely.

Chenille Needles- they have a large, long eyes and very sharp point to penetrate close weave fabrics. It is useful for ribbon embroidery. Its size is 13-26.

Doll needles – they are long and thin and are used for soft sculpturing on dolls especially on facial parts.

Beading needles -they are fine with a narrow eye and they are so long that number can be threaded at a time.

Spiral eye side threading – needles comes in variety of sizes and types. Good for those with lower vision and dexterity issues.

Ballpoints – these needles rounded points and used for knitting fabric.

Pin is a device used for fastening materials or objects together. It is usually made of steel, copper or brass. It is formed by drawing out the wire by sharpening the tip and adding a head. Pin comes in so many forms:-

Safety pin – Walter Hunt invented the safety pin by forming an eight inch brass pin into a bent pin with guard and spring. It is a simple fastening device, a variation of the regular pin which includes a simple mechanism and a clasp. They are basically used to fasten pieces of fabric.

Collar pin – it is a piece of man’s jewelry that holds the two ends of dress shirt collar together and passes underneath the knot of a necktie. It keeps the collar in the place and lifts the knot to give pleasing look to the necktie.

Bobby Pin – it is a type of hairpin usually known as hair grip or Kirby grip. It is metal or plastic pin used to coiffure to hold hair in place.

Cotter pin or R pin – these pins are made up of round wire of a harder metal. They are used in hair as they are easier to remove and reuse.

Lapel pin – it is a small pin often worn on the lapel of the dress jacket. They can be purely ornamental or indicator of the wearer’s affiliation with an organization or cause.

Push pin – a thumbtack or drawing pin is a short nail or pin with a circular or domed head used to fasten items to wall or on board to display.
