Beauty Schools offers training programs and courses about cosmetology. Cosmetology is the science and application of beauty treatments. Although you may not know that the increasing demand and pressure to look good is not something that only started in recent times, but in the earliest days of history.

There has been evidences found that led to the belief that the ancient Egyptians have practiced a distinctive way of self-beautification, which focused on the skin and appearance. During those days, a mixture of lead, ash and mercury was used as eye liner. As for the Chinese, ancient dwellers concocted a mixture of natural ingredients to create colorful nail polish. While Romans soon discovered aesthetic properties of lotions, oils and even animal fats. From then on, technological advancements were applied to cosmetology that lead to its development in different areas of expertise.

The art of cosmetology could further be divided into different types:

  • Hair Stylist — Hair styling is an area of cosmetology that focuses on creating different hairstyles. From cutting/trimming and chemical servicing such as hair relaxers, adding texture, perms, colors and restorative treatments are all the tasks of a Hairstylist.
  • Manicuring — Manicure is a term that refers to the cosmetic treat for the fingernails or hands, while Pedicure is for the toenails or feet. The origin of the word manicure is from two Latin words ‘manus'(hand) and ‘cura'(care).
The process of manicuring/pedicuring usually starts by soaking or applying on the hands or feet a softening, after which lotion is smeared over the softened area. The nail are then shaped then applied with nail polish. Artificial nail tips, acrylics, and nail gels may also be utilized in manicures. Small pictures and designs may be painted on the nails, as well as putting on tiny decals or imitation jewels. Proper sanitation is a major concern in Manicuring especially for the hand tools utilized in the process. There may be times that the skin and not only the nails are trimmed, thus there is a possible risk in proliferating infection.
  • Nail Technician — Both a manicurist and a nail technician performs manicuring and pedicuring but the latter is more specialized in the area of caring for the nails. Nail technicians have a knowledge on and could identify nail irregularities and diseases. However, they do not give or administer treatments for these diseases and only refer a client to a physician.
  • Esthetician — As for the study of skin care, an Esthetician is an expert in executing facials, microdermabrasion, body wraps (relaxing treatments which involve hot linens, plastic sheets, and blankets), salt glows (an exfoliation treatment), waxing as a form of hair removal, cosmetic make-up services and other services concerning the skin.
An Esthetician may work solely in a spa or salon or as an assistant to a doctor in beauty clinics. If working with a doctor, an esthetician may perform more advanced services under the doctor’s supervision like deep chemical peels. They should be able to skillfully recommend skin and body care products to clients and could be licensed exclusively for that skill.
  • Beauty Therapist — A Beauty Therapist specializes in treatments such as hair removal, massage, body wraps, skin care, eye lash and eye brow tinting, make-up and machine treatments like non-surgical facelifts and faradic muscle tone.
  • Electrologist — An Electrologist is an expert in all forms of electrolysis methods whereby using an electrolysis machine. Hair is permanently eliminated in Electrtolysis hair removal method.
